Popis: The aim is to describe response rates, response modes and interviewer background and to check for potential sampling bias among the five countries. Sampling rates were computed by country and sex. By describing the ways by which centenarian lists were obtained and how data were collected in the five countries comparability issues will be discussed. Sampling rates ranged from 30% in France to 86% in Sweden. In Sweden males were oversampled. Response mode consisted in direct interview for 28% of the sample (ranging from 5% in JP to 51% in DK), mixed interview involving both centenarian and a proxy for 39% (from 27% in FR to 48% in CH) and proxy interview for 32% (from 3% in DK to 57% in JP). Inteviewer’s background differed among countries. Participation rates, response modes and interviewer background should be taken into account when interpreting different health indicators and results will be adjusted accordingly.
