Popis: | There is clear evidence for the positive motor outcomes of patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN). 1 However, data for unintended neuropsychiatric effects of this procedure are accumulating. 2–7 Certain subsets of patients may be more likely to experience these adverse outcomes following implantation, but these are not yet clearly described. 2– 4,8 We report a case of a 51year-old Hispanic male with early-onset PD who became abruptly psychotic, apathetic, and cognitively impaired following DBS. The case draws attention to the still unanswered question of how to select patients who may be at risk for neuropsychiatric complications associated with this therapy. |
