Tro measure the effect specific nursing actions have on patient outcomes, we analyzed data from 4,146 patients as reported in 84 studies published between 1977 and 1984(1).We concluded that research-based nursing interventions can produce 28% better outcomes for 72% of patients. And better outcomes save money by shortening hospital stays. Because innovative nursing actions lack the drama of other disciplines' breakthroughs, the average patient may not realize that nursing speeded his (her) recovery. In fact, nurses themselves may not even fully realize it.
