This chapter expounds on intake decisions and outcomes in the juvenile justice system. According to available data, non-White adults and juveniles tend to have less favourable outcomes in both the front-end and back-end decision points in comparison to White juveniles. Juveniles are sent into the justice system due to referrals of their crimes instead of being guilty of the offences. Thus, overrepresentation often leads to large race and ethnicity differences in detention. While the processes of the juvenile court system are relatively complex, they could still reach potential outcomes of dismissing the case, deferring adjudication, or adjudicating the juvenile as a youthful offender. |
