Popis: THE immune complex renal disease of NZB/W mice is largely prevented and survival of the animals markedly prolonged by protein or calorie restriction1,2. These same dietary restrictions depress the antibody response3–7 and inhibit the development of spontaneous cancer8–10 in experimental animals. Spontaneous release of endogenous type C viruses (MuLV) and the autogenous host humoral immune response to these MuLV have been implicated in the aetiology of autoimmune disease in NZB and (NZB × NZW)F1 (B/W) mice11–14. We wondered whether the disease-sparing effect of a low protein diet in B/W mice was attributable to a decrease in the production of endogenous MuLV or a reduction in the host response to this virus. Our findings suggest that neither of these events is responsible for the disease prevention.
