Popis: The Sporothrix schenckii whole yeast agglutination test was performed on sera from presumably healthy persons, from patients with a clinically suspected fungal infection who were subsequently found not to have a fungal infection, from patients with mycotic infections other than sporotrichosis, and from patients who proved to have sporotrichosis. All patients with sporotrichosis had agglutination titers of 1:160 or higher. No agglutination was observed at these dilutions of sera obtained from healthy subjects or patients with fungal infections other than sporotrichosis. However, sera from a few persons without sporotrichosis exhibited agglutination at dilutions of 1:20 and 1:40. We conclude that a titer of 1:160 or greater is diagnostic and that a titer of 1:80 might be presumptive, but a titer of 1:40 or less should be considered to be only supportive evidence in the diagnosis of sporotrichosis.
