Popis: The study of hunger has strong correlation with food insecurity. This study attempts to estimate the degree of hunger and the correlates of hunger. The Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) guideline has been used to collect data from the selected villages of the Bankura district of West Bengal. We have constructed the hunger index from the responses of the people of those villages. We have used regression models to find the correlates of hunger. Our analysis shows that the degree of hunger is strongly related with education level and earning. Also hunger is more pronounced among the socially deprived people. There is also a gender dimension in hunger implying that the female headed families are in more vulnerable situation than the male headed families in terms of hunger. This paper attempts to categorize the hunger and tries to reach the root of this serious problem by using various regression models. Any policy to remove hunger must be directed as removing these root causes. Keyword: Hunger, Food Insecurity, Poverty, Deprivation, Health JEL Classification Number: I32, I38, I39, I18
