Popis: | This article is based on a study of the significance that women attributed to home cooking in late communist Bulgaria. It analyses how women negotiated their roles in the kitchen within the contrasting discourses: when home cooking was ideologically discouraged, but unavoidable; when it was officially marginalized, but socially and privately rewarding. Drawing comparison with other examples, the article concludes that the perception of home cooking is variable: the idea of cooking as a burden or a privilege can swing from one pole to the other in reaction to acknowledged external pressure. ispartof: Food and History vol:16 issue:1 pages:117-139 status: published |
