Popis: | Oral administration of a combined estrogen-progestogen formulation has been confirmed as a safe effective method of pregnancy prevention within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Use of emergency contraception has been limited in the UK and other countries by potential acceptors lack of knowledge of its existence. The present study considered the feasibility of re-regulating emergency contraception from a prescription-only medicine to an over-the-counter medicine available in community pharmacies under the supervision of the pharmacist--a proposal that has received widespread support from the medical profession in the UK. Management guidelines were developed by a team comprised of community pharmacists general practitioners and a family planning consultant. The guidelines suggest that over-the-counter availability could reduce the workload in general practice and family planning clinics and promote declines in the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions in the UK with no safety concerns. They provide information for pharmacists on the methods of emergency contraception indications and contraindications and counseling. The guideline (presented in this paper) include a flowchart for pharmacists summarizing management steps the theoretical rationale and a pharmacist checklist. |
