Popis: Coastal areas are where most of the world’s population lives and where the response to the UN Decade’s challenges will have the largest impact. Coastal communities face urgent challenges that are amplified by climate change. Solutions are required on the “Global Coastal Ocean” level, to leverage methods and assets, to provide reliable tools to policy-makers and managers, based on cutting-edge, smart and efficient technologies that can enable – for the first time – the design and implementation of an integrated coastal observation and prediction system. Such a system is urgently needed as a trusted, science-based framework that has been co-designed with stakeholders, in support of better informed and better prepared coastal populations, while delivering reliable solutions toward coastal resilience. This development is the essence of the UN Decade Programme “CoastPredict” and is reflected in implementing the CoastPredict Global Coastal Ocean Experiment (“GlobalCoast”). This initiative is being launched to provide a globally coordinated effort that implements technologies and methods in contrasting coastal areas, intercompares the outcomes and finds gaps. GlobalCoast will make possible the intercomparison and thesharing of results across world ocean areas, aligned with CoastPredict Principles and Outcomes. The scientific and technological strategy for implementing GlobalCoast demonstration test sites and the initiative’s objectives and expected outcomes will be elucidated.
