The development of structure during casting and heat treatment of a Zn25Al3Cu alloy was examined by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and x-ray diffraction, in order to improve its mechanical properties and microstructural stability. By a relatively simple heat treatment of the as-cast alloy, consisting of short-term annealing in the single-phase region followed by quenching, the ductility and structural stability have been markedly improved. These changes could be related to the structural changes taking place in the alloy. |
