Popis: Many words are derived from the names of persons or places well-known in history or literature; others are based on forgotten anecdotes or on men whose memory is kept alive only by the words which their names have contributed to the English vocabulary. It is often difficult to say whether a given word is a proper name or not. Eric Partridge’s Name Into Word (Secker and Warburg, 1949) has an appendix of 165 pages of border-line words which are sometimes regarded as proper names, sometimes as common nouns. The use of an initial capital is an unreliable guide.
