Highlights • Women's ability to negotiate the conditions and timing of sex with their partners is key to control several reproductive health outcomes. • Women's inability to negotiate for safer sex in many low- and middle-income countries puts them at higher risk of getting infected with STIs including HIV/AIDS. • In the present study, women with medium and high levels of autonomy in household decision-making were more likely to have greater safer sex negotiation. • Women who had primary, secondary or higher education were more likely to have safer sex negotiation. • Women's decision-making autonomy programs and interventions should be intensified to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 3.7.
