Popis: Herbert Spencer maintained that the factor common to play and the arts is that they make no direct useful contribution to life.1 The British thinker’s words reflect a view still widely held in the 19th century, a view whose educational implications (especially in “pedagogy of effort”) were later disputed by the new Progressive Education movement ushered in by Dewey. Dewey emphasised the ideological roots of that view which, knowingly or unknowingly, reflected Schiller’s intuitive thought that man is truly human only when he is at play.
