According to the WHO report in 2018, Road Traffic Accident is the sixth leading cause of death in Ethiopia with proportion of 4.81% from total deaths of the country and it is a cause of thousands of injuries. As a result, it is causing serious health problem and economic loses for the country. From this, Addis Ababa takes the lion’s share of accident risks because from the nation crashes more than half occur in Addis. The aim of this research is to indicate the way to reduce the impact of traffic accident by implementing road safety intervention on existing road network. The main objective of the study was to analyze the road traffic accident using Visum-safety software in Addis Ababa Kolfe-Keranio sub-city road network. A five years crash data was collected from Addis Ababa Transport Bureau (AATB) and Kolfe-Keranio Police Department (KKPD), whereas road geometric data collected from Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA). The collected crash data analyzed by Visum-safety software using AACRA road network shape file and OSM as network file. Frequency distributions of accident based on accident category, accident type, road user, contributing factors and based on time was generated. Hazardous locations or black spots and accident prone sections were identified and prioritized based on the accident frequency and accident density respectively. In addition, the safety condition of top black spots and accident prone sections was inspected on site and proposed countermeasures for the problems. Road safety interventions are needed to reduce the impact of the most contributing factors such as speeding, priority not giving and turning fault, by providing speed calming, traffic sign and traffic marking on the horizontal curved and downhill grade hazardous section and intersection approach |
