Potentiometric detection is still not routinely used in chromatographic methods of analysis. Applications started only 10 years ago, and the number of publications on the subject is estimated to be less than 50. The robust `coated wire' electrodes that are often needed in liquid chromatography (LC), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and micro-TAS applications were not readily accepted by electrochemists. Also, the working principles of potentiometric sensors are vaguely described in the scattered literature. The present article tries to give a unified picture of such working principles, based on thermodynamic concepts. It gives an overview of the application of potentiometric detectors that were developed for LC and CE. Future prospects are given. |
