This is an entirely new part of this textbook that describes the liver MRI techniques and approaches that are currently used in the clinical setting. This is followed by the most recent information on the gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), including the chemical structure, the biodistribution, the excretion pathways, and the safety aspects. Since the first edition of the book in 2007, tremendous development occurred regarding the GBCAs. After the initial publication in 2006, the medical community became familiar with a new disease associated with the GBCAs. This is of course nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). After recovering from the initial shock, we have learned a great deal about this disease and how to best deal with the underlying causes of NSF. The professional organizations, the vendors, the scientists, and the medical community came together and have adequately dealt with NSF. The most problematic GBCAs were identified and practice guidelines were made available to apply in the high-risk patients. |
