Popis: | Decreasing atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic events is highly desirable, and the prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease may be possible even from early ages. Attention has been focused by some on decreasing serum cholesterol levels. Serum cholesterol has been termed a "risk factor" for cardiovascular disease. This is a misnomer because, even in extensive epidemiologic studies in which elevated serum cholesterol levels have been associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, no causal relationship has been established. A more accurate term, with present knowledge, is that an elevated level of serum cholesterol (or specific lipoprotein or apoproteins) is a "marker" for increased cardiovascular risk events. |
