Popis: A retrospective analysis of all 394 women who requested reversal of tubal sterilization during 1984-92 at Brazils State University of Campinas infertility clinic underscored the importance of patient selection and counseling prior to sterilization. The mean age of these women was 31.4 years; mean parity was 3.1 and the number of living children was 2.7. The mean interval from sterilization to reversal request was 5.3 years. 95 of these women withdrew their request for laparoscopy after the initial consultation; another 35 were refused 21 due to male infertility and 14 because of contraindications to pregnancy. Of the 264 women who were approved for endoscopic work-up an additional 86 decided against the procedure at this stage. Of the remaining 177 women 86 were deemed ineligible for reversal due to the poor condition of the Fallopian tubes. Only 69 of the 91 eligible candidates decided to persevere with the reversal process. At the 12-month follow-up 13 of these women had achieved pregnancy. Significant is the finding that only 17.5% of women initially requesting sterilization reversal actually underwent microsurgery. To reduce the incidence of post-sterilization regret greater selectivity of appropriate sterilization candidates and counseling about the complexities associated with reversal are urged.
