Popis: | 1. 1. Females of Papilio demoleus were offered artificial leaves prepared from Ostwald coloured papers and Bauman grey papers in a large cage. 2. 2. In the presence of the odour of citrus plants, the larval host plant, the females showed on the artificial leaves a characteristic drumming reaction which is preliminary to actual deposition of eggs. 3. 3. The drumming reactions were restricted to the blue-green, green and yellow-green colours. The most favoured colour was bluegreen (Ostwald no. 18), even though this was not similar to the colour of leaves on which eggs are normally laid. No drumming was performed on any of the grey papers indicating that the above colours were preferred because of their colour quality and not because of their degree of brightness. 4. 4. The females favoured blue-green colour (Ostwald no. 18) when slightly desaturated with white. 5. 5. While resting, the imagines of Papilio demoleus preferred blue-green and green colours. The range of colour preference while resting as compared with that while drumming is shifted slightly towards the green region. |
