THE development of sub-contracting practices is often referred to as one of the ways to stimulate the growth of small-scale enterprises and the creation of employment opportunities. However, in most of the writings proposing such sub-contracting practices, the kind of sub-contracting patterns aimed at relate in most cases implicitly or explicitly to situations in which the sub-contracting firm (i.e. the principal or parent firm) is of a relatively larger size than the sub-contractor, i.e. the small-scale firm. Indeed, in many cases, the parent firm is supposed to be situated in the modern sector, operating on a larger scale and sometimes being of foreign origin and ownership. But it can be argued that the potential of sub-contracting relationship between firms of a small size should in this respect not be overlooked, and deserves to be given more attention. In the literature d&ealing with sub-contracting, various categories of reasons are presented for which a parent firm may involve a suib-contractor in its productive activities.
