Popis: | Iron taken by mouth in sufficient quantities has been reported to produce various gastrointestinal disturbances including colicky pain, constipation, and sometimes diarrhea? A search of the literature revealed no report of the gastrointestinal side effects of iron-fortified formulas. One report stated that gastrointestinal disturbances were no more common in infants fed iron-fortified formulas than in the control group? Another stated that iron-enriched formula was taken well, and no gastrointestinal side effects were noted. ~ Neither of these reports presented any data to substantiate the conclusions. The data presented here suggest that in our population the use of iron-fortified formulas does not cause diarrhea or diaper rash. In fact, diaper rash is significantly less frequent in infants fed iron-fortified formulas. I t is possible that a rare infant may have a specific intolerance to iron, with resultant gastrointestinal symptoms. This study did not evaluate the effect of iron on regurgitation, vomiting, or colic, or differentiate between different brands of iron-fortified formulas. |
