Popis: | Pulmonary vascular disease is a common and potentially serious complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPO). It has been estimated that approximately 50% of patients with COPO older than 50 yr of age will develop pulmonary hypertension, and survival rates from COPO approximate those of inoperable lung cancer when pulmonary vascular resistance is greater than 550 dyne-s-cm" (1). By contributing to an already compromised oxygen delivery system, pulmonary vascular disease in this setting impacts not only on survival but on the quality of life as well (1,2). Because the signs and symptoms of pulmonary hypertension in patients with COPO are subtle and nonspecific, a delay in establishing a diagnosis and instituting therapy is common. This article will review the current status of the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension in COPO. |
