Popis: BACKGROUND The aim of the study is to study the correlation of serum magnesium among patients admitted with diabetes and proteinuria at Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital during the study period between March 2016 and October 2016. MATERIALS AND METHODS An observational study approved by the ethical committee. 50 patients admitted in the general medical ward were recruited for the study. RESULTS There was a drop in serum magnesium levels as the duration of diabetes, degree of proteinuria and HbA1C level increase. Serum creatinine also showed a negative correlation with serum magnesium. CONCLUSION Our study has shown a negative correlation between serum magnesium level and proteinuria. There was a significant inverse correlation between serum magnesium and duration of diabetes. Serum magnesium levels are low in patients with high fasting blood sugar and high HbA1c levels. As the duration of diabetes increases, proteinuria also increases.
