Formal caregiver such as nurses and case managers play an important role in detecting practical problems of people with dementia and advising them on possible solutions to facilitate aging in place. A decision support app was developed to support them with these complex tasks. In a randomized controlled laboratory experiment (N=67) we evaluated whether usage of the app resulted in improved confidence and uniformity in problem assessment and advices on solutions. Additionally, we examined the added value of the app in semi-structured interviews (N=8). Although, we were not able to show improved scores in confidence and uniformity, formal caregivers said they would use the app in clinical practice and emphasized its added value (i.e. clear guidance in conducting an in–depth problem assessment and having a broader perspective on possible solutions). Although formal caregivers view the decision app as a valuable tool, further research is needed to test its effectiveness. |
