Popis: | Reproductive success in species that have retained a planktonic stage is dependent on the release of larvae during periods when abiotic and biotic factors are optimal. Analysis of stratified plankton samples collected from May through September 1980 indicated reproductive activity for Callinectes sapidus throughout the summer with a peak in late July. Presence of stage I larvae was positively correlated with temperature. Seasonal distribution of megalopae was bimodal with a broad peak occurring in late August through September. This suggests a two phase recruitment. Timing of reproduction and recruitment coincide with seasonal changes in current patterns that would enhance larval retention in the offshore waters near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. |
