Popis: for the research presented at the International Conference on Diseases of Zoo and Wild Animals, May 2009, Hilvarenbeek, The NetherlandsFatal Panleukopenia Virus Infection In A Lynx LynxFeline panleukopenia is a highly contagious disease that infects domestic as well as wild felids worldwide. Historically, and in areas where vaccination is not practiced, panleukopenia has resulted in the death of several cats. As in domestic felids, this disease usually presents with acute onset of symptoms including anorexia, depression, vomiting and diarrhoea. The disease is transmitted by direct contact, fomites and aerosols, and the virus persists for extended periods of up to one year, in the environment. Although modern vaccination practices have reduced the incidence of panleukopenia greatly, and the disease is rare today, its acute onset and high rate of mortality especially in young kittens, turns feline panleukopenia into an infectious disease with considerable impact in captive populations of endangered wild felines.
