Popis: | Summary Two groups of aphasic male adults were matched on pre-Porch Index of Communicative Ability scores, age, educational level, and months post onest of left cerebral vascular accidents. The experimental group of eight aphasics received 20 sessions of writing therapy, which included (1) writing the alphabet from memory, (2) writing the names of mono-syllabic pictured objects, (3) writing mono-syllabic words to dictation, (4) writing mono-syllabic words to dictation, after each had been said three times by an experimenter, and (5) writing monosyllabic words to dictation, after each had been put into a sentence by an experimenter. The control group of six aphasics received a plan of multi-modality language therapy. This consisted of word level (1) auditory comprehension, (2) reading, (3) naming, (4) repeating, and (5) writing the names of pictured objects. Nonparametric statistical procedures yielded the following results : (1) the groups did not significantly differ on their post-tests, although the .05 level of significance was approached, (2) the experimental group obtained a significantly greater degree of improvement from pre- to post-tests than did the control group, and (3) the experimental group did not significantly respond in a differential manner to any of the five writing tasks. Concluding comments note the desirability of (1) the possible inclusion of a matched aphasic group which would not have received language therapy, and (2) additional studies which would systematically vary selected aphasia treatment parameters. |
