SUMMARY In this case of a newborn boy with mongolism (karyotype 47, XY, 21 +), conservative management of congenital eversion of the upper eyelids proved successful. Adhesive strips would not hold the eyelids closed, so for the first two months in the life of the infant, his eyes were covered with a clear plastic food wrap to prevent drying and polymyxin B-neomycin ointment was instilled daily. The patient responded to this conservative therapy with no damage to the exposed conjunctiva or the cornea. |
