Various news media outlets have often claimed to be impartial and representative of unbiased information, with the BBC being at the forefront. In its inception, these reports were predominantly that. Within television, the broadcasts were informative, to the point, and by contemporary standards, dull. However, as dramas have become more film-like within its fictional programmes, news broadcasters have faced competition. As such, news sources have started to broadcast their reports with more dramatic styles, focussing on form above content in order to win their share of the audience.As a result of this focus on winning audience shares, broadcasters have utilised certain filmic devices that grab and hold the attention of viewers. The literary review within this dissertation finds that existing texts, whilst a basis for further research, do not accurately address the issue of the use of filmic devices. Similarly, printed press have witnessed the competition of televised and online media sources, and have utilised more dramatic language in order to increase the likelihood of purchase. Subsequently, this sections of this dissertation will explore the most prominent aspects of these techniques within news reports, utilising archival, qualitative and quantitative research methods to analyse various media broadcasts and printed reports. |
