Popis: | Innovations in the delivery of health care have not kept pace with advances in medical knowledge and techniques. An increase in population and an increase in the ability to pay have turned the need for health care into a demand for health care. There has not been a concomitant increase in the number of physicians trained for geriatric medicine or interested in geriatric care. The very nature of the management of chronic disease demands a re-allocation of responsibilities so that the physician's unique capabilities can be better utilized. This calls for a change in our present system of health care delivery. Quantity, quality, availability and cost are important factors in planning. Primary care can be delivered by a physician-nurse team responsible for the total care of the patient. The nurse can organize a coordinated approach. Thus the care of the geriatric patient can become a rewarding field of endeavor that should enlist the support of young physicians, nurses and paramedical personnel. |
