Morphological and histological characteristics of two Middle Devonian acanthodian taxa known exclusively from isolated fin spines, Archaeacanthus quadrisulcatus Kade, 1858 (type species of Archaeacanthus) and Devononchus concinnus (Gross, 1930)(type species of Devononchus), are described and compared. New data on the diversity of internal structures of fin spines of the two taxa suggestthat there are no distinctive characteristics to identify Devononchus as a separate genus. Thus, the study supports the view of L.A. Lyarskaya (1975), who has attributedD. concinnus to Archaeacanthus(asA. concinnus). |
