Popis: The basic concepts of order, molecularity, rate coefficient, and the temperature dependence of rate are presented first, before turning to theoretical interpretations of rates of bimolecular reactions in the gas phase such as collision theory and transition-state theory. The modifications needed when long-range forces operate, as in ion–molecule reactions, are indicated. Unimolecular and termolecular reactions may occur via discrete steps, which can often be treated kinetically using the stationary-state hypothesis. The dependence of rate on pressure (and temperature) may be complex. Consideration is given in the last section to the kinetics of processes occurring on and within water droplets and other atmospheric aerosol particles.
