Western Sahara is also called the Arab Democratic Republic of the Sahara, and you can meet the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). This territory is located in the very West of Africa and borders the Kingdom of Morocco, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. The country has unobstructed access to the Atlantic Ocean. The historical names, in addition to the Spanish Sahara, were also translated as "Golden River" and "Red Stream". This territory played a powerful role in trans-Saharan trade, but with the expansion of waterways, it began to decline. According to the decision of the Berlin Conference of 1884-85, it came under the control of the Spanish Empire. The following year, the king of Morocco attempted to reclaim Western Sahara but was defeated. After significant geopolitical transformations, the establishment of a protectorate over Morocco, etc., the historical (own) territories of Rio de Oro and Seguiet el-Hamra were united in Spanish Africa. |
