Popis: | An extraction and assay procedure for urine thyroxine (T4) has been modified to enable the parallel determination of tri-iodothyronine (T3) by radioimmunoassay. Urinary T3 excretion, over a 24-hour period, is similar in both healthy and inpatient euthyroid individuals and in pregnant women. Serial values, over a period of 28 consecutive days, remain within narrow limits in normal indi viduals. Significantly low T3 values are found in neonates and in patients with primary or secondary hypothyroidism, whereas patients with huperthyroidism have urinary levels above the normal range. A single intramuscular injection of thyroid-stimulating hormone results in a pronounced increase in urinary T3 and a smaller increase in T4 excretion. |
