Popis: | * Summary. - Description of a new species, Taterillus petteri (Rodentia, Gerbillidae) from Burkina Faso (formerly Upper-Volta) and west bank of the Niger river. This species has a caryotype 2N = 18 or 19 chromosomes ; it is addicted to sandy grounds and occurs in parapatry with the sibling species Taterillus gracilis (2N = 36 or 37). Both differ in morphology, ecology, biochemistry and physiology. The status of T. petteri is discussed in relation to the various forms of Taterillus angelus Thomas and Hinton, 1920 and Taterillus lacustris Thomas and Wroughton, 1907. The authors underline the role that rapid and cyclical climatic shifts in bioclimatic zonation of West Africa had in creating new forms of Taterillus ; these new forms have reduced chromosomes number, and usually a sahelian distribution. The authors think that T. petteri is isolated in the G loop D of the Niger river, and that Taterillus arenarius Robbins, 1974, known from Mauretania (and possibly from Asben, in Niger) is confined to the left bank of Niger river.
