Popis: Often adjuncts on NP- and VP-level in German triggers sentence splittings when translated into Norwegian. In this way adjuncts of the German version are frequently rendered as independent sentences or as conjuncts in coordinative structures in Norwegian. This article argues that the translation process sheds light on the informational contribution of the adjuncts in the original. The main tendency is that adjuncts relatively far to the left in the source sentence give some kind of background knowledge and/or embody consequential relations. This is shown by the fact that they are often rephrased in the Norwegian version as first conjuncts in coordinative structures. Adjuncts further to the right in the original sentence are often an integrated part of the informational focus and trigger translation strategies aiming at conveying elaboration relations, e. g. largely blocking the possibility of coordinative structures.
