Results are reported from preliminary studies on the hazard potential of Np/sup 237/ in rats. Some of the experiments were performed with a dust that consisted principally of Al, Fe, and U, with Np present to the extent of about 0.08% by weight. Data are tabulated on the inhalation of this dust. Since Np/ sup 237/ has a half life of 2.2 million years, chemical rather than radiation toxicity is indicated in the acute case and metabolic studies with Np/sup 237/ may be hampered by toxicity problems. Data are presented on the 24-hr retention of gavage-fed carrier-free Np/sup 237/ administered as the citrate and as the nitrate, amd short-term studies of tissue deposition. Results show that Np is concentrated in bone, liver, and kidney during the period immediately following administration. (C.H.) |
