Popis: The efficacy of oral glucose electrolyte therapy has been studied in 28 children under 6 months old suffering from mild to moderate dehydration. The dehydration was caused by several different bacterial agents: Enteropathogenic E. Coli Enterotoxigenic E. Coli Shigella sonnei Giardia lamblia and E. Histolytica. All patients were successfully rehydrated with oral fluids with the exception of 3 who were later administered intravenous fluids because of deterioration of their condition. This study conducted in Lagos Nigeria reports a successful outcome in all 28 cases. Side effects usually attributed to oral rehydration have not been evidenced. Hypernatraemia excessive weight gain and puffiness have not occurred with these infants. A chart gives details of weight before and after treatment age/sex electrolytes present blood urea fluid intake and isolates.
