Internal energy distributions in the CO2 product of CO oxidation on a Pt surface have been measured using Fourier transform infrared emission spectroscopy. The analysis reveals that the distribution of states within any given mode is Boltzmann but that each mode is characterized by its own temperature. In order to observe the effects of coverage on the product energy distributions, the results for different surface temperature are compared. This comparison reveals that a given increase in surface temperature causes a much larger increase in symmetric stretch temperature. A simultaneous reduction in the translational energy is postulated. Simplified trajectory calculations in light of the experimental results suggest that the transition state comprises a CO2 molecule standing nearly vertical and slightly bent as it is formed. |
