Popis: | The aim of this chapter is to study the genesis and evolution, over the centuries, of the image of the sea as a chaotic entity, paradigmatically represented by the tsunami phenomenon and, specifically, by the idea of its detention and contention by the forces of cosmic order. The image of the sea as a chaotic entity posing a constant threat to the earth and its inhabitants is reflected in the mythical and cosmogonic narratives of the Near East such as the Ugaritic Baal Cycle and in the Hebrew Bible. Tsunamis were framed by Christian authors in the context of the struggle between God and the sea. Additionally the image of the miraculous detention of tsunamis by establishing a sacred and impassable boundary was then reworked in the Christian world over the centuries, thus giving rise to a singular case of longue durée. |
