Popis: High hydrostatic pressures were applied to embryonic chick heart fibroblasts at various temperatures and the resultant changes recorded. The maximal solation of the cytoplasmic gel occurs at a specific pressure level which is, in turn, dependent on temperature. This solation causes the loss of typical fibroblast shape and results, for the most part, in the formation of spherical cells. Each 5 °C increment of temperature required a corresponding and proportional increment of pressure (750 psi) to achieve maximum solation. The formation of pseudopodia-like blebs during the course of the experiments is discussed in terms of sol-gel transformation. These data indicate that maintenance of a cytoplasmic gel structure is a prime requisite for the achievement of characteristic cell shape and are in full agreement with previous data on cytoplasmic gels occurring in a wide variety of different organisms.
