Parents may enact similar parenting behavior toward their children as they experienced in their own childhood which suggests a consistency in parenting behaviors across generations. However, not all individuals inevitably emulate the parenting they experienced as children when they become parents. In this sense, examining the mechanisms and conditions that amplify or alleviate the degree of intergenerational transmission of parenting is needed. One potential indirect mechanism might be adolescent aggressive behavior which might be promoted by negative parenting in early adolescence and might foster harsher parenting towards one’s own children later. Moreover, individual and relational factors might play protective role in adulthood which might weaken the degree of consistency in negative parenting across generations. The current study aims to investigate such possible mediator role of aggression and moderator role of individual (i.e., effortful control) and relational factors (i.e., partner support) to understand how the cycle of negative parenting can be disrupted across generations. |
