Popis: The greatest burden of childhood illness occurs in developing countries where neonatal mortality accounts for two thirds of infant deaths.1 A lack of access to appropriate primary health care for newborn infants, together with social factors such as poverty and ignorance, explain this woeful situation. Excellent guidance on practical ways to tackle this crisis successfully is provided in a recent supplement to the Journal of Perinatology ,2 which presented 12 articles on an extensive field trial of home-based neonatal care in Gadchiroli, a very poor, rural area in India.
