Popis: | Glitches are a perennial issue for video games; due to their complex nature, nearly all games suffer from some sort of glitch. But do glitches impact the fictional nature of video games? That is, how might the interactive experience of a fictional world one has when playing a video game be molded by any encountered glitches? In this chapter, we examine the relationship between glitches and fictionality. Specifically, we argue that, from the perspective of philosophy of fiction, video game glitches are distortions of the intentional communication between fiction makers (the game’s developers) and fiction consumers (players). Some such distortions entail a miscommunication of what is fictional, while others communicate new, unanticipated fictional content. We detail the fictional relevance of each glitch type, and discuss possible strategies for dealing with these cases of fictional (mis)communication. |
