Popis: We have measured electron spectra arising from keV collisions of doubly charged helium, neon and argon ions with a single crystal Cu(110) surface. At low angle of incidence the projectiles are reflected from the surface. Under these conditions the following two step processes contribute to the electron spectra. In the first step the doubly charged ions are converted to singly charged ions by Auger capture or by resonant double electron capture followed by autoionization or Penning ionization. In the second step the singly charged ions are neutralized by Auger capture. Calculations on the electron production processes have been performed using model functions for distance-dependent transition rates and transition energies. The main features of the observed spectra can be well reproduced in these calculations if it is assumed that the metal does not respond instantaneously to the sudden changes induced upon the emission of fast electrons in the various charge exchange processes.
