Popis: | A non-ionic surface-active substance, Tween 60, induced alterations of ascites tumour cells: 1. 1. Neutral red-containing granules disappeared and diffuse staining of cytoplasm was observed. 2. 2. Cells became sensitive to the lytic action of trypsin and permeable to the labelled proteins. 3. 3. Electrical resistance of a unit area of cell surface decreased about three times. 4. 4. Electrophoretic mobility of cells decreased at 10–20 per cent. These alterations were found to be reversible. The inhibition of RNA, ATP, and protein synthesis in ascites cells was not accompanied by the alteration of permeability to trypsin. These inhibitions had no effect upon the restoration of normal permeability after incubation with Tween. The role of the alterations of the permeability of cellular membranes in the regulation of cellular activity is discussed. |
