Stark broadening and shift of the first two Paschen lines of hydrogen

Popis: The broadening and shift of the first two lines of the Paschen series of hydrogen have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The application of an earlier developed Green{close_quote}s-function approach predicts a nonlinear behavior of the shift of the Paschen {alpha} line that is confirmed by the observations. The experiments have been carried out applying a wall-stabilized arc running in neon or argon seeded with hydrogen. The electron density range covered by the experiments is 0.5{times}10{sup 16} cm{sup {minus}3} to 25{times}10{sup 16} cm{sup {minus}3}. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
