Latinx men continue to be disproportionately underrepresented at 4-year colleges and universities, particularly those who begin their postsecondary journeys at community colleges. Several factors can contribute to this attainment gap and insufficiently meeting Latinx men college students’ basic needs can be one of the contributing factors. This is becoming a concern to our nation’s leaders as the Latinx population continues to grow in representation and will become a large segment of the future workforce. Research about experiences of Latinx men enrolled at community colleges and 4-year institutions highlights the challenges these students encounter in trying to achieve academic success. The focus of this study is the intersection of three factors: (a) identification as a Latinx man, (b) basic needs insecurity while at a California community college (CCC), and (c) transfer to a 4-year academic institution. This study contributes to the growing understanding of the community college transfer process for Latinx men. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to capture the lived experiences of Latinx men who faced basic needs insecurities while attending a community college during their process to transfer to a 4-year institution. By collecting experiences of Latinx men who have successfully transferred, this study increases knowledge of the transfer process through participants’ perspectives. Findings of this study can inform practices of higher education professionals to improve academic outcomes of Latinx men attending postsecondary institutions. |
