Popis: In 1987 we started a prospective study of quality of life after coronary artery bypass surgery. By that time, a certain relief from angina through operation had been well documented and randomized studies had additionally shown survival benefits of surgical over medical treatment. Reductions in drugs, care and sickness benefits were considered to neutralise the cost of the operation. However, other reports of post-operative symptoms and complications [1 2], as well as problems in psychosocial [3 4] and vocational [5] adjustment, cast a shadow on the usefulness of surgery. The requisite aim of the operation had broadened to improving quality of life. This investigation initially began by longitudinally studying the change in functional and psychosocial status in the first year after operation.
